Save Face: Put A Hat On It

I would stop just shy of calling me a ‘sun-worshipper’.

I live for the warmer months when I can feel the sun on my face. My favorite color is this lovely shade of raspberry you see on the inside of your eyelids when you turn your face to the sun. I’ve never minded my freckles (you know the ones that feel compelled to ‘pop’ in the summertime?)

But my dermatologist made a comment to me about 2 years ago that plays over and over in my head…. and I will confess, it has made me a bit of a ‘hat’ girl in the sun. At least 75% of the time. I still need a little bit of a fix…. but I recognize the importance of protecting my skin now, more than ever – especially the skin on my face.

I happened to mention that I didn’t want to be one of those ‘older women relegated to sitting under the pool umbrellas with a hat on’. And you know what she said? ”Well….one of these days, hopefully soon, you’ll realize, you NEED to be one of those women.” And it hit me: she meant NOW. And that was two years ago. Somehow, without even realizing it… I had already reached that ‘old woman’ status in my mind.

I already needed to be protecting my skin from the sun on a regular basis and I was failing. Sunscreen was good, but not enough.

So, I did the only thing that made me happy in the face of this news…. I vowed to be sylish.

And each year, I recommit to this vow. I hope you are inspired by a few of this summer’s hot, hat options and will consider offering your face a little extra protection. You know you don’t get a second chance, right?
